We have an amazing congregation. It’s not by accident that we are warm, generous and genuine. Shir Ha-Ma’alot attracts warm, generous and genuine people to join and be a part of our congregational family. Whether it’s singing in the choir, reading from the Torah, staffing a booth at Purim or donating to the Annual Appeal, so many of us contribute our time, energy and resources. Last year, your generosity helped us to fund additional programming for our Temple, investments in our school programs as well as sponsorship of young families. You rose to the occasion and understood that dues pay for the regular operations of our Temple. Your donations to the Annual Appeal help us to do the extras that are so intrinsic to our Synagogue.
We are off to a great start on our Annual Appeal that will run through the end of November 2016. On Kol Nidre I mentioned an Israel Program that we would like to establish this year. The thought behind this program is to provide the SHM community with information and events geared toward a greater awareness about Israel. If possible, depending on the funding, we would also like to establish a fund for scholarships to SHM members for attendance at advocacy programs such as AIPAC. The investment in this program is entirely dependent on you, our Congregation.
Who shall prosper and grow and continue to innovate? The answer, in fact, depends on the response to our High Holy Day Appeal. Remember the refrain of the Unetanneh Tokef chanted during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: “But teshuvah, tefillah and tzdekah* temper the Lord’s severe decree.” By contributing to our High Holiday appeal, you have the opportunity to fulfill one of Judaism’s most sacred obligations.
